Buying a guitar for the first time can be a really difficult decision if you don't know what you are looking for. So we've put together some answer to the most frequently asked questions to help you:
Where should I buy my guitar from? You can buy a good quality basic guitar from any music store. Never buy a guitar from e-bay unless you know what you are getting, and guitars from toy shops, Target or K-Mart etc are only toys and are not suitable for lessons. Remember you do get what you pay for and most really cheap guitars are just that - cheap - and will usually either be unplayable or will break very easily, making them not so cheap in the long run.
What type of guitar should I buy?
A nylon string guitar is the best guitar for a beginner to start on. Nylon strings are gentler on the fingers and so a much better option for a beginner who has not yet developed calluses on their fingers. Two guitars we would recommend for a beginner would be either a Valencia (at under $150 it's the most basic we would recommend) or a Yamaha C40 (for around $200 it's a great guitar to begin with).
You can obviously spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on a guitar but there really is no need unless you decide until you decide that guitar really is for you.
What accessories will I need? To start with you don't need much apart from your guitar and some picks (plectrum). Other accessories which come in handy are:
guitar case or gig bag;
guitar stand;
electronic tuner;
folder (to put your music in).
